I hope you don't mind me posting this here...
An uncountable number of years ago, the story of my life occured.
It was a cold dawn the day I was born. The clouds flew lazily across the sky, the sun peeking out from under a puffy blanket. My eyes opened for the first time, and I took me first breath.
I opened my eyes once more only to be greeted by darkness. There was a great weight pushing me down... down...
I opened my mouth to breathe, but the darkness came and filled my lungs, plugged my throat. I tried to raise my arms, to call for help, but the darkness was unconquerable. i screamed, felt my body shake, but no sound was heard.
I felt the wieght leave slowly from my chest. I felt my body contract as I sat up, and my lungs contract even more as the darkness left and poured across the ground in front of me. I blinked, tears coming to my open eyes in pain. I looked back, behind me. There was a stone, with letters and numbers written on it. I believe one of the groups of letters was my name, but I couldn't be sure, as I had yet to learn how to read. I raised my arms and looked at them. I had no clothing besides the soft earth clinging to me body. I blinked and looked up. There was a man, his shadow blocking the harsh light from my eyes.
"Happy Birthday." he said. I looked to him and blinked again, not understanding. "So you don't know how to speak. Shame. I'll have to waste time to teach you." I blinked again. His rough voice echoed in my head. "I'll... teach... speak. I... know... speak." The words came slowly to me. I knew, somehow, that I was speaking wrong, saying the wrong things. I blinked again and stared at him.
He looked suprised. "So you do speak! Do you understand what I am saying?" A pause of silence occured as I searched for the right words. "I... do... understand?" The man chuckled. "I get it now. You're only repeating what you heard. You're a smart one. You might have a chance after all." "Chance... what? I have... chance?" The man sighed and crouched by me, laying his shovel on the ground. "Listen kid. Just a few moments ago you were dead, ok? Dead. Dead, buried, gone. Not even breathing." I blinked, trying to understand how I would be here, breathing, if I was dead?
The man sighed once more. "You obviously don't remember, so i'll have to explain it to you. You are one of the chosen. In fact, you are the only chosen left." <They killed off all the rest.> he added silently, and yet I heard him ever so faintly. He looked to the stone behind me. "That," he began, raising his hand and extending one finger to point at the stone, "is your tombstone. It has your name, your date or birth, and your date of death. Looks like you died the same day you were born. How long did you live for?" I sat there and blinked. He sighed. "One minute? Two? A second?" he asked, his voice desperate.
I smiled.
